When it comes to deep fried sides, Swensons does it best when it comes to their famous potato teezers. Naturally, when the weekly challenge was to represent my region, I had to pick Swensons' Galley Boy burger to mimic - and if I was going to make the burger, I had to make the teezers!

With the original Swensons a mere few steps from my home, I had to do some investigative blogging and get the real deal for myself so I could truly match the flavors note for note. I knew these teezers would be the hardest part, so I spent several minutes munching on the teezers trying to get them figured out.

This is what it looks like fresh from the drive-in! While I may not have recreated the teezers exactly as you can buy them from the drive-in, I think I hit it pretty close when it came to flavor, so that's really all that matters!

Instead of making mashed potatoes from scratch and letting them cool overnight, I simply bought some prepackaged mashed potatoes that fit the need just right (and they were only like $3!)

I melted the cheese for a few minutes before adding it into the mashed potatoes along with the flour.

Then just add the jalapeños, mix it all together, then use a tablespoon to measure out spoonfuls of the dough. Roll each dough ball in the panko before dropping it into the deep fryer for 3-4 minutes or until crispy and golden brown. Serve right away with ranch as a side, in true Swensons fashion.

  • 4 cups cold mashed potatoes (leftovers or packaged)
  • 1/2 cup flour

  • 1/2 cup panko
  • salt & pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups oil, for deep frying

Here's How:

The Starving Chef Blog
  1. Preheat the deep fryer to 400°F. In a small bowl, melt the block of Velveeta cheese until just chunky. Combine in a larger bowl with the mashed potatoes. Add the diced jalapeños and stir well to combine.
  2. Add in the flour, a few tablespoons at a time, until a thick dough forms. Then use a tablespoon to measure rounded spoonfuls. Plop each spoonful in a small bowl filled with panko.
  3. Cover each ball throughly with panko and shape into small elongated triangles. Drop batches of 5-6 teezers into the fryer and cook 3-5 minutes, or until the teezers are golden brown.
  4. Serve alongside a cup of ranch dressing and a homemade Galley Boy for the full 'Swensons at home' experience. Enjoy!
