breakfast casserole ingredients

Here’s What You Need

  • Shredded hash browns: The starchy base that holds the casserole together and adds a crispy texture.
  • Biscuit dough: Adds fluffiness and absorbs flavors, acting as the comfort element of the dish.
  • Eggs: Acts as a binder for the casserole and provides protein and richness.
  • Cheddar cheese: Adds a creamy, sharp flavor, and helps in binding the ingredients together.
  • Heavy cream: Contributes to the fluffiness and creaminess of the eggs.
  • Bacon: Infuses the dish with a smoky, savory flavor and adds a bit of crunch.
  • Breakfast sausage: Brings in extra protein and spices, enhancing the overall savory profile.
  • Onion: Adds a touch of sweetness and sharpness, balancing the fatty elements.
  • Garlic powder: Gives the dish a quick and easy boost of garlic flavor.
  • Salt & Pepper: Fundamental seasonings that enhance all the other flavors in the dish.

First up, I started my breakfast casserole with a layer of hash browns. Oh yeah, you heard that right. Hash browns as the foundation mean you’re setting yourself up for success. Next, I added a layer of biscuits because what’s a breakfast bake without the classic comfort of biscuits?

Then, I threw in some bacon, onions, and sausage. A trifecta of flavor, if you ask me. To make things even more exciting, I scrambled some eggs and mixed in cheese. Because, let’s be real, eggs and cheese are like the Batman and Robin of breakfast foods.

Finally, I topped it all off with another layer of hash browns and let it cook until it turned a lovely shade of golden brown. Trust me on this; this breakfast bake is the ultimate cure for any morning blues, hangovers included.

Tips & Tricks for Breakfast Bakes

  • Choose Quality Sausage: A flavorful breakfast sausage will elevate the entire dish. If you want less grease, consider turkey sausage.
  • Check Biscuit Doneness: Sometimes the biscuits can take longer to cook in the middle of the casserole. If they’re still doughy, extend the baking time.
  • Shredded vs. Cubed Hash Browns: Shredded hash browns will give a crispier texture, while cubed hash browns will be softer. Pick according to your preference.
  • Cheese Variations: Feel free to mix in some other types of cheese like mozzarella or pepper jack for different flavors.
  • Control Saltiness: If your bacon and sausage are already salty, be cautious when adding extra salt.
  • Frozen Hash Browns: If using frozen hash browns, make sure to thaw and drain them well to avoid excess moisture in the casserole.
  • Egg Substitute: If you’re out of eggs, a mixture of silken tofu and baking powder can act as a binder, though the flavor will differ.
  • Prep Ahead: You can prepare the meat and hash brown layers ahead of time and store them in the fridge. Just add the egg mixture right before baking.
  • Baking Dish Size: Ensure you’re using the recommended casserole dish size for even cooking. If you’re using a smaller or larger dish, adjust the cooking time accordingly.
  • Oven Calibration: Ovens can run hot or cold. If you know your oven’s quirks, adjust the temperature or cooking time as needed.

And just like that, you’re armed with all the insider knowledge you need to master the Biscuits & Hash Browns Breakfast Bake. With a better understanding of each ingredient’s role and a few pro tips in your back pocket, you’re more than ready to tackle this tasty morning treat.
