It’s Harry Potter Week!

That’s right, Hungry Muggles. Every year during the last week of July, I transfigure my kitchen into the halls of Hogwarts and recreate the fantastic feasts and magical treats that can be found throughout the wizarding world.

This year, I’m exploring the treats concocted within the very halls of Hogwarts – by students themselves… now if I could only tell which one was which.

Fred and George Weasley are known throughout the books to create all sorts of michief during their time at Hogwarts. But probably one of their more popular pranks – and one that foreshadowed their future successes – were Skiving Snackboxes.

You can actually find Skiving Snackboxes at the real life Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. On my last adventure there, I made sure to grab a box and save a few candies to recreate for Muggles at home!

I don’t know about you, but I think my candies look pretty dang close to the original! Maybe even a look a little bit better? They certainly taste exactly the same!

What Are Skiving Snackboxes?

Skiving Snackboxes contained charmed candies that will give the consumer a mild ailment, something just strong enough to be excused from class but not seriously maimed.

But don’t worry! One half of the candies contains a quick cure for any maladies, so you won’t be down and out for the rest of the day – simply eat the other half and you are cured! Fred and George tested their magical products on themselves before selling samples to first years to see if they all had the same effect (much to Hermione’s chagrin).

In each box there are a variety of candies – some will give you nosebleeds, others will make you puke and another one will make you faint completely.

This one will give you a fever.

The Muggle version of fever fudge is much more tame – although it might be a little spicy! Contained within the blue colored fudge are chewy bits of firey cinnamon bits.

Making Fever Fudge

Fortunately for us Muggles, the non-magical version of this treat is quite simple to make.

  • sweetened condensed milk – pumps up the sweetness and keeps the fudge creamy smooth
  • white chocolate chips – helps to firm up the fudge while it is setting
  • blue candy melts – give the distinctive blue coloration
  • cinnamon chewy pieces / jelly beans – the fudge at Universal has jelly beans, but if you can’t find cinnamon beans, cinnamon bits work in a pinch (and won’t bleed like jelly beans!)
  • vanilla – to enhance the overall flavor of the fudge

Just melt it all together and let it set! Sprinkle on the cinnamon bits before the fudge is fully set and swirl them into for best results.

The fact that Fred and George were coming up with these incredible magical treats in their spare time as fulltime Hogwarts students just goes on to show how impressively intellegent they really were – and very much deserved their success at Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes!

Copycat Fever Fudge

  • Line a square pan with parchment paper. Grease lightly and press the parchment down into the corners so that the bottom is smooth to the pan. Leave some of the parchment overhanging around the edges of the pan to make removing the fudge easier.
  • Prepare a double boiler over medium high heat. When the bowl is hot, add the sweetened condensed milk and vanilla. Stir until heated through and lightly steaming.
  • Stir in the candy melts and white chocolate. Continue to stir until the candies have completely melted into a smooth batter-like consistency.
  • Pour the fudge into the prepped pan. Shake the pan lightly to evenly distribute the fudge to the edges. It should be about a half inch to one inch thick.
  • While the fudge is still hot, sprinkle on the cinnamon candy bits. Use a toothpick or knife to swirl the bits lightly into the top of the fudge.
  • Allow the fudge to set at room temperature – at least 4-8 hours. Once set, it should lift out of the pan easily using the edges of the parchment.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the fudge into individual servings. Serve to unsuspecting first years and enjoy while skipping classes.
