What’s Up, Hungry Hobbitses

The road goes ever ever on, and today we’re stopping to nibble on wild sorrel – and perhaps make it into a tasty sandwich or two.

So as an adult, it only made sense to incorporate my love for LOTR into my cooking – and not just with any simple recipes. Being who I am, with a passion for LOTR that has been around longer than my love for Harry Potter (true story), I decided the best possible way to truly immerse myself into Middle Earth was to turn myself into a hobbit, feet and all.

So as an adult, it only made sense to combine my love for Middle Earth with my love for food – and not just any food, but meals you might actually find on a hobbit’s table. Being who I am, I took it a step further: I turned myself into a hobbit, feet and all.

Watch My Adventure to Middle Earth

[Coming Soon!]

I went on an epic adventure to recreate and eat meals inspired by The Lord of the Rings – and I even went to a real-life Hobbit House in the Blue Ridge Mountains to do it. Some day, I aspire to get to the real Shire in New Zealand, but until then, I’ll have to settle for a trek to Shenandoah to get the Middle Earth vibes closer to home.

This sandwich is inspired by Bilbo’s quests in The Hobbit, where he survives on sorrel, wild strawberries, and water from streams. In order to recreate these wild ingredients at home, I grew my own sorrel and tomatoes in my backyard. And I even made the sourdough bread from my own starter (you don’t have to bake your own bread, but it definitely makes all the difference when it’s fresh).

Then I packed up all of my sandwich ingredients and went on a quest to find the Shenandoah Hobbit House. Watch my full adventure above or follow me on Youtube for even more epic foodie adventures!

Here’s What You Need

A simple sandwich for simple folk!

  • Sourdough Bread: A hearty foundation, sturdy enough for travel
  • Tomato: Brings bright, garden-fresh flavor
  • Sorrel: Sharp, lemony bite that adds the freshness of wild greens gathered on the road.
  • Mayonnaise: Binds everything together while adding a smooth contrast to the tart sorrel.
  • Bacon: A salty, smoky crunch

Let’s Cook

Every good hobbit knows that the smell of sizzling bacon is enough to wake even the sleepiest of travelers. Place your skillet over medium-high heat and cook the strips until crisp and golden brown. Once finished, pat them dry with a paper towel and set aside – though it may be hard not to sneak a piece or two.

Build Your Second Breakfast

In the same skillet (or over an open flame if you’re feeling brave), toast your sourdough until each side is golden and warm. Hobbits appreciate a bit of char, especially when it comes with the scent of a campfire.

Take your toasted bread and slather one side of each slice with a generous layer of mayonnaise. Hobbits may live simply, but they never skimp on the things that make life delicious.

Layer on the fresh tomato slices, crisp bacon, and a handful of wild sorrel. The sorrel’s tart flavor balances the salt and fat of the bacon – the kind of simple perfection that makes a hobbit smile. Press the sandwich together gently so the sorrel wilts slightly against the warmth of the bread.

Time for a Bite

Whether you’re sitting by a campfire, at the edge of the woods, or in the comfort of your own hobbit hole, this sandwich tastes best with your feet up and a good story nearby. Pair it with a hot cup of coffee or a pint of ale if the day’s work is done.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does sorrel taste like? Sorrel has a tart, lemony flavor – bright and earthy, almost like a foraged spinach with a hint of citrus.
  • Can I substitute something for sorrel? Yes! If sorrel isn’t in season or available, arugula or baby spinach with a squeeze of lemon will give a similar tang.
  • Can I make this vegetarian? Absolutely. Swap the bacon for roasted mushrooms or a smoky tempeh strip to keep that savory bite.
  • What kind of bread works best? A sturdy sourdough holds up beautifully, especially when packed for travel. Rustic white or wheat bread will work too.

Hobbit BLT Tips and Tricks

  • Grow your own sorrel if you can – it’s easy to care for and comes back every year.
  • Use the leftover bacon grease to toast the bread for extra flavor.
  • Wrap the sandwich in parchment paper and twine for the full hobbit-picnic experience.
  • Add a slice of sharp cheddar or gouda if you want a richer, heartier meal fit for dwarves.

The Road Goes Ever On

A good hobbit never travels on an empty stomach, and this sorrel sandwich is the kind of meal that makes a long road feel shorter. From a simple bite by the fire to a picnic under the trees, this sandwich captures the charm of Middle Earth’s simplest comforts.

But the journey doesn’t end here – along the way, there are campfire breakfasts of eggs and ham, lembas bread from Elven kitchens, mutton loaf for afternoon tea, and seed cakes with cream waiting at the final feast.

For now, enjoy your second breakfast – and keep walking. There’s still plenty to eat on the road ahead.
