What’s Up, Hungry People
Who else is ready for the start of farmers’ market season!? Shopping at local farmers’ markets is beneficial for numerous reasons. It supports small businesses and local farmers, ensuring that more of your money stays within the community. You also gain access to fresh, seasonal produce and handmade goods that are often healthier and more flavorful than store-bought alternatives. Plus, farmers’ markets foster a sense of community, connecting you with the people who grow and make your food.
In my little town of Medina, Ohio, each Saturday starting late spring, the town square shuts down to allow for a fabulous farmers’ market on the bricked streets.
Farmers’ Market Adventures: A Trip to Medina’s Finest
With vendors from all over the state, it’s hard to find a bad meal here. Some of the best meats, dips, and granolas I’ve picked up from our local farmers’ market! This round, I got some fresh ramps, popcorn, jerky, bread, goat cheese, and a specialty ramp salt that has greatly enhanced many weeknight meals. Even things like fresh salsa and jelly are coveted items, so I always do my best to pick up a little bit of everything. Most towns will host some kind of farmers’ market – whether it’s weekly or monthly depends on your hometown. Sometimes, markets are open year-round – like the West Side Market in Cleveland.
A Brief History of the Medina Farmers’ Market
The Medina Farmers’ Market has been a cherished tradition in our little town of Medina, Ohio, for many years. Established in the early 2000s, this market has grown from a small gathering of local farmers to a bustling hub of community activity. Each Saturday, from late spring through early fall, the town square transforms into a vibrant marketplace where vendors from all over the state come to showcase their goods.
Initially, the market featured just a handful of vendors offering fresh produce, meats, and homemade goods. However, as its popularity grew, so did the variety of products available. Today, you can find everything from artisanal breads and gourmet cheeses to unique spices and handmade crafts. The addition of live music and special events has further enriched the experience, making it a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike.
The market’s success can be attributed to the strong support from the community and the dedication of the vendors, many of whom are small business owners passionate about their products. Over the years, the Medina Farmers’ Market has not only provided access to fresh, locally-sourced food but also fostered a sense of community and connection among its patrons.
Sample Galore
Of course, what farmers’ market would be complete without SAMPLES!? Most of the vendor’s either own or operate the business directly and have an intimate knowledge of the products they are selling – and are more than happy to offer free samples! Medina’s farmers’ market usually starts late spring, depending on Northeast Ohio’s weather (we’ve had frost and snow as late as the third week of MAY before!!) but it’s early start gives us locals access to ramps and scapes – which can be rare to find in your standard grocery.
