What’s Up, Hungry People
I’ve been a life long fan of the Lord of the Rings triology – I remember dressing up as an arrow-weilding Legolas for a school book report where I had to summarize the Two Towers for a classroom full of 12 year olds. I read all of the books and most of the Silmarillion before I was even in high school. I still have all of the original extended editions on two-part DVD (prior to the controverisal Blueray recoloring and everything!). To say I was a book nerd through and through was an understatement and I’ve carried that nerdiness with me through to adulthood.
The road goes ever on and on – and tonight it leads us straight into Hobbiton, where we’ll find some of the finest salt in all the Shire. On their journey to Mordor, Sam brings some of this salt along with him in a small wooden box as a reminder of home in case they came across a roast chicken.
A Taste of Home
Sam carried his salt from the Shire all the way to Mordor and back. I’d like to think he seasoned his salt with herbs he collected from Frodo’s garden at Bag End (he was his gardener afterall). While there’s no wrong way to make the salt, the most important thing is that the herbs are fully dried and remind you of your favorite flavors.
For my salt, I used items from my personal spice collection and focused on seasonings that resonated with the many adventures I’ve shared with my husband from around the world as well as locally sourced. Pick the flavors that remind you most of home or trigger a certain memory.
For me, those flavors included garlic and dill that remind me of home; and herbs like tarragon remind me of our days in France, for example. A few weeks ago I smoked some sea salt as an experiement and added a dash to my mixture to add some smoky flavors inspired by Mordor. Really you can make the salt any way you like!

Here’s What You Need
“It’s very special, that. It’s the best salt in all the Shire.”
- coarse sea salt – large crystal salt gives more surface area for the herbs and other flavors to stick to
- tarragon – reminds me of our time in Frace
- marjoram – reminds me of our incredible adventures abroad
- dill – reminds me of home, plus adds freshness
- garlic grilling seasoning – one of my favorite local brands has an incredible garlic seasoning blend that goes with pretty much anything
- smoked salt (optional, if you can find it!) – I smoked my own salt as an experiment and tossed some into this mix; if you can find or DIY smoked salt, it makes a great flavor additon
- local ramp salt – brought at my local farmers market, the salt is seasoned with ramps grown in my county

One Does Not Simply Make Salt from the Shire
Actually, you can! It’s really as simple as mixing together the coarse salt with your favorite herbs and seasonings until the salt appears “dirty” and well mixed with the seasonings evenly distributed throughout.
Extra Tips for Perfect Salt from the Shire
- Use high-quality herbs: Dried herbs work best here since they won’t introduce moisture to the salt, which could cause clumping. Make sure they’re fresh for maximum flavor.
- Grind if needed: If your herbs are too large or coarse, you can give them a quick grind in a mortar and pestle before mixing them in. This helps them integrate better with the salt.
- Storage tip: Store your salt in an airtight container to keep it from absorbing moisture. A cool, dry place will keep it lasting longer.
- Flavor balance: Taste the salt as you go. If one herb seems overpowering, you can adjust the proportions to suit your taste.
Common Questions Samwise’s Salt
- Can I use fresh herbs instead of dried? It’s best to stick with dried herbs for this recipe. Fresh herbs could add moisture, which could lead to clumping or spoilage.
- How long can I store the salt? When kept in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, the seasoned salt will last indefinitely.
- What if I don’t have ramp salt? You can substitute it with another locally sourced seasoning or even a bit more of your favorite herb and salt combo.
- Can I use a different type of salt? Yes, but make sure it’s coarse. Finer salts won’t give the same texture and might overwhelm the herbs.

Sam’s salt from the Shire is perfect for any occasion when you want a taste of Middle Earth in your kitchen. Whether you sprinkle it over a roast chicken or toss it onto some roasted vegetables, it adds a special touch that brings a bit of adventure to every meal. The combination of herbs and locally sourced salts makes it unique to your own journey, just as Sam’s salt was to his. So grab a jar, mix up your favorite flavors, and start seasoning like you’re on the road to Mordor!
