What’s Up, Hungry People
This week, I’m taking a unique twist on “meal prepping” by focusing on desserts, specifically prepping them in mason jars. I’m a devoted fan of homemade gifts, and this year, I’m excited to share my DIY cookie kits with everyone. The star of my gifting lineup? White Chocolate Cranberry Cookies.
These cookies are the perfect gift for teachers, co-workers, friends, or family. I mean, who can resist a freshly baked cookie? Simply attach a tag with baking instructions (feel free to use the recipe I’ve included below!), and you’re all set. It’s a thoughtful and delicious way to show you care, and it allows the recipients to enjoy baking with minimal effort.
To complete the cookie dough, you only need three additional ingredients: coconut oil (or unsalted butter, if you prefer), two eggs, and a dash of vanilla extract. I opted for coconut oil this time around after discovering mid-recipe that I had run out of butter. However, both options will yield delectable results.
Imagine the smile on Santa’s face when he sees something other than the usual holiday cookies. These soft, chewy delights are bound to secure your place on Santa’s “nice” list!
Here’s What You Need
- Brown sugar: Adds moisture and a rich, molasses flavor to the cookies.
- Flour: Provides structure and body to the cookie dough.
- Baking soda: Acts as a leavening agent, helping the cookies rise.
- Cornstarch: Gives the cookies a tender texture.
- Salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances overall flavor.
- Sugar: Contributes to the sweetness and texture of the cookies.
- Dried cranberries: Offer a tart contrast to the sweet cookie base.
- White chocolate chips or chunks: Add creamy, sweet flavor pockets throughout the cookies.
- Coconut oil or butter: Adds fat for flavor, richness, and tender texture.
- Eggs: Bind the ingredients together and provide structure.
- Vanilla: Adds a warm, aromatic flavor to the dough.
Let’s Cook
First things first, grab your mason jar and let’s start layering. Begin by packing the brown sugar tightly at the bottom. This is going to add a lovely molasses depth to our cookies. Next, sift the flour right in there. Make sure to tap the jar gently on your counter to settle the flour into an even layer—it’s all about creating that picture-perfect stratification!
After the flour, sprinkle in the baking soda, cornstarch, and salt evenly over the top. These ingredients are crucial for getting that perfect cookie rise and tender crumb. Now, pour in the white sugar and follow that with a generous layer of dried cranberries. These tart little beauties will give our cookies those bursts of fruity flavor.
To top it all off, add the white chocolate chips or chunks. Push them down a bit to pack everything in. We don’t want any shifting during transport! Once everything is in place, screw the lid on tightly, and voilà, your cookie mix gift is ready to make someone’s day.
Baking Your Cookies:
Now, onto the baking! Preheat your oven to 350°F to get things started. Grab a large mixing bowl and combine the coconut oil (or butter, if you’re going that route), one egg, and a splash of vanilla. This mixture will be the base of our dough.
Empty the contents of your mason jar into the bowl. Start mixing—either with a hand mixer or a stand mixer—until the mix is nicely crumbly. Now, crack in the second egg and keep mixing until you see a cookie dough starting to form.
Once your dough is ready, take spoonfuls of it and arrange them on an ungreased baking sheet. Remember to leave about two inches between each cookie—they need some room to spread out.
Slide the tray into your preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes. You’re looking for a golden brown color and cookies that have puffed up a bit. Once they’re done, let them cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes. This waiting time helps the cookies firm up a bit, so they hold together perfectly when you transfer them to a cooling rack.
Baking Success Tips
- Choosing the right fat: Coconut oil gives the cookies a slightly different flavor and a crisper texture than butter. If you prefer a richer, softer cookie, stick with butter.Choosing between coconut oil and butter can affect the texture and flavor of your cookies. Coconut oil tends to make the cookies crispier, which some might prefer for a crunchier bite. Butter, on the other hand, will give your cookies a richer taste and a softer texture. It’s all about your preference or what you have on hand at home.
- Packing the jar: Make sure to pack each layer tightly in the mason jar to prevent the ingredients from shifting and mixing. When assembling the cookie mix in a mason jar, it’s crucial to pack each layer down firmly. This prevents the ingredients from mixing during transport and ensures that the layers remain distinct and attractive. A tightly packed jar also makes it easier to combine the ingredients evenly when preparing the dough.
- Cookie spacing on baking sheet: Keep enough space between the dough balls to allow for spreading. When placing the cookie dough on the baking sheet, remember that the cookies will spread as they bake. Spacing them at least two inches apart ensures they won’t merge into one giant cookie. This spacing allows each cookie to bake evenly, achieving a perfect golden brown without the edges burning.
- Cooling cookies: Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet before moving to a cooling rack.Letting the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes helps them set properly. If you try to move them too soon, they might break apart. Transferring them to a cooling rack after they’ve set ensures they cool completely without becoming soggy from the residual heat of the baking sheet.

So, there you have it—your very own guide to crafting and baking white chocolate cranberry cookies right from a mason jar! Whether you’re looking for a unique gift idea or just want to shake up your holiday baking routine, these cookies are sure to please. Not only are they easy to make, but they also bring a whole lot of cheer wherever they go. Gather your jars, layer up the ingredients, and you’ve got a perfect present ready to go. Remember, it’s the thought—and the taste—that counts. Happy baking, Hungry People, and may your holidays be as sweet as these cookies!
