Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Shrimp: Adds a delicious seafood flavor and protein to the dish.
  • Avocado: Provides a creamy and smooth texture, complementing the spiciness and adding healthy fats.
  • Red Onion: Adds a crisp and tangy flavor to the avocado dip.
  • Lemon Juice: Adds a bright and tangy citrus element, enhancing the overall freshness of the dish.
  • Plain Greek Yogurt: Gives the avocado dip a creamy and tangy base, providing a contrast to the spicy shrimp.
  • Paprika: Adds a smoky and slightly sweet flavor, as well as a vibrant red color to both the shrimp and dip.
  • Cumin: Provides a warm and earthy flavor, adding depth and richness to the shrimp and dip.
  • Lemon Pepper: Offers a zesty and peppery kick, elevating the overall flavor profile of the shrimp.
  • Onion Powder: Enhances the onion flavor in the shrimp coating, providing a savory and aromatic element.
  • Olive Oil: Coats the shrimp, helping to cook and brown them while adding a subtle richness.

Let’s Cook!

The star of this recipe is the avocado dip, which I whipped up on a whim to complement the shrimp. It’s incredibly easy to make and adds a refreshing twist to the dish. Simply blend together avocado, yogurt, onions, cumin, coriander, and paprika until you achieve your desired consistency.

If you’re aiming for a dip suitable for chips, go for a guacamole-like texture with chunky avocado bits that are perfect for dipping those chips. However, for pairing with spicy shrimp, a smoother dip works wonders. It allows the shrimp to be coated in a layer of cool awesomeness that balances out the heat.

Quick and Flavorful Cumin Shrimp

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show—the cumin shrimp! This recipe is a regular in my household, mainly because it’s incredibly simple to prepare. You’ll have a delicious dish on the table in no time! Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Toss the shrimp in a mixture of olive oil, cumin, coriander, paprika, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Pop the shrimp beneath the broiler for about 3-4 minutes, or until they turn a beautiful shade of pink. It’s a quick cooking process that ensures your shrimp are cooked to perfection.

That’s it! The shrimp is ready to be devoured. The blend of spices adds depth and flavor, making each bite a delight.

Tips for Homemade Cumin Shrimp

  • Chilling the dip: For best results, chill the avocado dip before serving to allow the flavors to meld together and for a refreshing, cool dip.
  • Choosing the right shrimp: Opt for fresh or frozen shrimp and ensure they are peeled for easy consumption.
  • Broiling time: Keep a close eye on the shrimp while broiling as they cook quickly—3 to 4 minutes is usually sufficient to achieve a juicy and tender texture.
  • Adjusting consistency: Adjust the consistency of the avocado dip to your liking by blending it for a shorter time for a chunkier texture or longer for a smoother, creamier dip.
  • Customizing the dip: Feel free to add additional ingredients to the avocado dip, such as minced garlic, lime zest, or chopped cilantro, to personalize the flavors to your preference.
  • Serving suggestions: Serve the cumin shrimp and avocado dip as an appetizer, on a bed of crisp lettuce as a salad, or in warm tortillas for a flavorful taco experience.
  • Ingredient substitutions: If you don’t have Greek yogurt on hand, you can substitute it with sour cream or regular plain yogurt for a slightly different taste and texture.
  • Marinating the shrimp: For an extra burst of flavor, marinate the shrimp in the spice mixture for a short time before cooking, allowing the flavors to penetrate the shrimp.
  • Adding heat: If you enjoy a spicy kick, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the avocado dip to amp up the heat.
  • Garnishing options: Sprinkle chopped fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro over the dish before serving to add a pop of color and an herbaceous touch.
